JIGDO-EASY2WIN README --------------------- 1. What is jigdo-easy2win? Jigdo-easy2win is an easy, menu-operated fullscreen textmode front-end that uses the robust and efficient jigdo scheme (`Jigsaw Download') to download Debian CD images, or anything else offered in jigdo format. Jigdo-easy is an extended version of jigdo-lite by Richard Atterer. 2. Anything I need to know before running jigdo-easy2win? No, just run it. Well, in case it wasn't clear already, the downloaded image plus some temporary data will always be placed in the same directory that jigdo-easy2win is in, so make sure you have about 700 MB of free disk space there. 3. How do I start jigdo-easy2win? Double-click on the file named `runme' or `runme.bat'. Be sure to carefully read all messages on screen. You can stop reading this README now. Just try it and if it works, don't come back here. 4. Any special system requirements? Jigdo-easy2win includes Cygwin technology which is advertised as running on "all non-beta versions of Windows since Windows 95, with the exception of Windows CE." We have successfully downloaded CD images with jigdo-easy2win on Windows 95 and Windows 2000 (which is the successor to the NT versions). 5. How can I get jigdo-easy2win to run as fast as possible? Close all other programs and run jigdo-easy2win in full-screen mode. 6. I need to stop the download, or: I accidentally pressed the Reset button. You can stop the download at any time, with Ctrl-C, by (forcibly) closing the window it's running in, or by rebooting. To resume, just select the same image to download, and the download will continue where it was interrupted. 7. After downloading a lot of files it says it still needs more. As it also says, try again with another Debian FTP mirror. Not all mirrors are equally up to date. If that doesn't work, chances are that the required files are not available at this time. Try again in a few days and you'll either see that the required files are available again, or that a new image has been created. In the latter case, you can probably still re-use the files that were downloaded in the incomplete image, simply because that image is logically correct. The missing files will show up just like they should, with the correct length, but will contain all zeros. You can burn the incomplete .tmp file to a CD (CD-RW preferred), and point jigdo-easy2win's `Local files' question to it. All files that are useful for the new image will then be fetched from the incomplete CD and will not be downloaded again. 8. The screen sometimes flickers and/or displays things so fast that I can't read it. These are normal diagnostic messages, you can safely ignore them. Anything you need to read will wait for you pressing a key to continue. 9. Can I use jigdo-easy2win to create my own CD images? No. Jigdo-easy2win is a download tool, just like Netscape, GetRight and Gozilla. To create your own Debian CD images, you need to run a Debian system and use the debian-cd package from: http://packages.debian.org/debian-cd After creating your own image, you _can_ use jigdo to distribute it; this needs only a few MBs of your own web space, and can re-use the 200+ Debian FTP mirrors for the bulk of the traffic. 10. What parts of Cygwin does jigdo-easy2win use? It uses files from the following packages, that were downloaded from http://mirrors.sunsite.dk/cygwin/ (latest/ and contrib/): bash-2.05a-2.tar.bz2 clear-1.0.tar.gz cygwin-1.3.6-6.tar.bz2 fileutils-4.1-1.tar.bz2 grep-2.4.2-1.tar.gz gzip-1.3.2-1.tar.bz2 libintl-0.10.38-3.tar.bz2 sed-3.02-1.tar.gz sh-utils-2.0-2.tar.gz textutils-2.0.16-1.tar.bz2 wget-1.7-1.tar.bz2 For more information on Cygwin, see http://www.cygwin.com. Note that you do NOT have to install the complete Cygwin environment in order to run jigdo-easy2win; all needed components are already in the jigdo-easy2win package. April 2002 J.A.
